At Da Qiao Primary School, we believe that everyone can flourish, develop their talents/skills and become contributing citizens. Our focus on the holistic development of students is encapsulated in the school’s mission ‘Developing Students’ Potential, Inculcating Moral Integrity & Social Responsibility, Nurturing Resilience & Creativity” as well as the school core values of CREATE, namely, Compassion, Responsibility, Enterprise, Appreciation, Teamwork and Excellence.
Teachers are key at Da Qiao Primary and they play a crucial role in building quality teacher-student relationships and providing a nurturing and safe environment for learning and engagement in and out of the classroom. As a school fraternity, we are committed to develop “A Flourishing School with Happy and Confident Learners” through Positive Education (Pos Ed) and Holistic Assessment (HA).
Pos Ed focuses on specific skills that assist students to strengthen their relationships, build positive emotions, and celebrate accomplishments in engaging activities that are meaningful and purposeful. This encompasses the tenets of wellbeing which is termed PERMA (Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationship, Meaning and Accomplishment). From one’s physical, intellectual, emotional and social health, the strength of every individual is capitalised on consciously, resilience is nurtured in the community and the habit of mindfulness is practised by everyone. The skills of wellbeing developed through Pos Ed enables students to FEEL GOOD about themselves as they DO GOOD towards others. It also helps to increase attention, improve self-regulation, enhance classroom engagement, and develop students with the skills needed in the 21st century.
The emphasis on wellbeing is complemented with a customised approach to teaching and learning. HA (which is a balanced use of formative and summative assessments) provides the skills of achievement to every student. Students take ownership over their learning and are engaged in lessons where peers are part of the learning resource. Formative assessments in day to day lessons have led to improvements in achievements as students learn to be self-directed and independent learners.
To further enhance the holistic development of each student, the Year Head system at DQ which comprises the Lower school (P1 & P2), Middle school (P3 & P4) and Upper school (P5 & P6) guided by our taglines GROW to Flourish, STRIVE to Flourish and EXCEL to Flourish, allows better customisation of programmes and closer monitoring of each student’s progress and wellbeing.
The school will continue to leverage its Pos Ed ecosystem to bring about a shift of language and mindsets through its Teach, Embed and Live approach so that everyone in the DQ community can flourish. We also endeavour to be engaged in close partnership with parents and the community to develop happy and confident learners.
